Obsessed With Chickens

Lately I’m obsessed with chickens. This winter, we will be building a chicken coop at our house.  I’m REALLY excited about this.  I’ve been laying out a design to figure out how big I want it and where I want it.  Yes I have become obsessed with it.

(I feel I need to note that I am not raising these chickens to eat, however we will be eating the eggs. I’m raising the chickens for enjoyment and for the experience. Now the turkey is another story… and another blog)

A couple weeks ago I ordered 4 books about chickens and turkeys and they just came in.  Yay!!

Chickens 1.1

One of the books, Pocketful of Poultry has been totally awesome.  Its a book full of pictures and facts of all sorts of cool chickens.  So I spent the other night trying to figure out what chickens I wanted to have in my new coop.

First was the Rooster… we can only really have one in our coop so to pick out which cool one I wanted the most.

Here were the finalists

Rooster #1: I think this one is just so freakin cool. I love is feathery legs and the colorful body!
Chickens 1

Rooster #2: Look at that tail!! The only problem is this rooster is a pretty small one compared to average roosters. Could he handle all the hens?
Chickens 2

Rooster #3: This one to me doesn’t look a rooster… its just so unique all the way around!
Chickens 3

Rooster #4: Another long tail guy and he is much bigger then the other rooster similar to him. But this guy is a jumper! He 6 feet high with clipped wings!
Chickens 4

But the winner was the Silkie because they are very friendly and I want to raise it to be a family pet. (if possible)

Rooster #5:
Chickens 5

Three types of hens we’re going to have.  I’m excited that we’ll have lots of farm fresh eggs.

Chickens 6

Chickens 7

We will also be having some hen silkies since they do well as foster mothers and such.

This book though was totally awesome and I have to share some of the other cool chickens.

Chickens 8

Chickens 9

Chickens 10

Isn’t there some really cool chickens out there? And each breed has its own type of personality… like dogs.

Chickens 11

Now this chicken was unbelievable as I was reading about it… first look at this thing

Chickens 12

This chicken looks tall right???  Its called a Malay and it is the tallest in the chicken breeds.  It stands over 3 feet in height!!!  Don’t believe me… look at this.

Chickens 13

Yes… stand up and get a tape measure out if you need to.  I am 5’3″ and that bird would stand up and its head would be at my stomach. Unbelievable!!  There is no way I’m having a chicken that is almost as tall as me!  But he sure would be cool to see.

What about you?  Do you have chickens?  Do you want chickens??  Which rooster would you had picked?  Please share your story…

I am obsessed with chickens too. I am 13 years old and I have been begging my parents for chickens for over 8 years now. always a no. I went to the fair in the fall and spent half the day in the chicken house, admiring all the breeds.. also, they do sell baby chicks there too and i promised myself I would buy one, no matter what. i didn’t care what my parents said. unfortunately, they had run out of chicks. DANG! Well, my neighbor is getting some chicks. 20 of them! but they only want 6 of the chicks since they already have 30 chickens. They are selling the remaining 14 chicks, and I am going to buy one. I am so scared of what my parents are going to say though when they see a baby chicken in a cardboard box up in my room. Any advice??? lol I love silkies too!

  2. I’m not sure “obsessed” is the right word to describe my love for chickens … or maybe it is. :) Read about my flock here: http://sweetmissdaisy.typepad.com/sassy_sweet_notes/poultry/

    Have fun!! :)

To go along with what we said here:

This morning I had a viewer come to my blog from a search engine. In the search engine they typed: people obsessed with chickens

Yea… I think that says it all. LOL
